Oh, it's so lovely to know you enjoyed this post! Reflecting on your work with fresh eyes is a great practice; we're usually kinder later on. I just have to remember this next time ☺️💛
It really is! I mean that happens a lot with life in general but I hadn’t thought how much it can also happen with your own art. It's a creative journey I hadn't fully appreciated till recently 💛
Such a beautiful video! Love looking back at past paintings - I always remember just where and when and why a piece was painted. I take an artists residency every year and find that those paintings I create in a different space hold special meaning and depth of story.
Thanks so much for watching the video and sharing your thoughts, Juliette! I’m curious if there’s a recurring theme or subject that you find yourself consistently drawn to, even if your style changes over the years. It's always a pleasant surprise for me to discover either a specific subject or a new technique making its way into my recent paintings.
Also, I'm genuinely interested in hearing more about your artist residency experience. That would be a great read!
I’ll be sure to write more about my artist residency! I’ve been painting at the beach this last week and wrote about that for this week - it’s beautiful how our surroundings affect the work 🌞 I always find myself drawn to painting faces. Whether it’s an up close portrait or a woman with feathers or wings and wild hair. It’s the eyes and the face that allow me to heal and express what’s in my heart, what I see and feel in the world, and then the colors and layering seem to shift depending on what the eyes have to say in each painting. It’s such a fun process 💛 love hearing about your process as well 🙏
I'll keep an eye out for your post about the art residency; I'm so curious now! Earlier this year, I did some portraits in my sketchbook, and I've been meaning to try again on a larger scale but haven't gotten around to it. Whenever I'm in a museum or gallery, it's the portrait paintings that grab my attention. So, it's lovely to hear about your experience painting portraits and how it allows you to express yourself.
Your Yopo plant painting is gorgeous!
Hey Bethan - sorry I missed this before, but thanks for the lovely compliment!
I love everything about this post, Susan. How lovely to look back on your painting with different eyes.

Isn’t it amazing how the physical artwork brings back so many memories of what was happening as you made it!
